The Girdwood Fire Department is a combination department with both full-time staff and volunteers. Full-time career personnel are on shift every day working with volunteers on responses. The department is overseen by a community-elected Board of Directors.
Deputy Chief, Manch Garhart
Deputy Chief Garhart has been a member of the department since 2007, bringing with him 18 years of experience in both private and public sectors of emergency services. His career began as a guide for skiing and climbing both in the Cascade Mountains of Washington and internationally. Prior to his acceptance of a full time position at GFD, he was employed by the University of Alaska Anchorage as the University Safety Officer and as Adjunct Professor-College of Health. He currently fills the role of a Type 3 IC for The Alaska SAR Incident Management Team and is versed in numerous regulatory compliance agencies including NFPA, OSHA, DOT. His Academic education includes degrees in Emergency Management, Emergency Services, and Fire Science. His certifications include Firefighter Instructor, Technical Rescue Instructor, FEMA NIMS/ICS Instructor, ASHI Training Site Coordinator / Instructor Trainer, Alaska EMT III/ACLS, Hazmat Technician and others. Chief Garhart oversees fire and rescue training for Girdwood Fire Department.
